There used to be just one well known school aged activity camp holiday. Now there are hundreds to choose from and the vey busy family with both parents out at work, these can bring a tremendous boost for families with a single child and not many relatives or local activity clubs to join.
There are several in the outer London area – take one in Hertfordshire for example. They take both primary and secondary age groups. Single children are also welcome and they tend to become very confident, stable adults if they have been given the opportunity to join a non-family group. This is where young folk learn to mix with others, share in community activities and learn to care for the feelings and needs of others. Very often there will be challenges in the activities and this brings out the leadership qualities in some children early on.
Team activities such as abseiling; climbing; high ropes; problem solving; and many others, require absolute concentration and listening to the leaders. The rules are there for a reason and they teach young people to adhere to a programme and give their best, whether they know how to do something or not. They will always have leaders in charge who are experienced at caring for and demonstrating skills and crafts.
The accommodation will be in purpose-built blocks or pods – many of the children will already be boarders away at school and so will be used to this communal arrangement. Food is provided throughout with three good meals a day plus evening cocoa and snacks. It all sounds fab and oh to be a young teen again!
