How do energy companies use estimated bills? Because I have just queried with Scottish Power how they will arrive at their estimated bill for January. On November 25th they said the cost was increasing, I got the letter in early December. But i knew this was happening so I took metre readings on November 25th. If I hadn't done this how would they have reconciled at which rate I would be charged? Eg if I had gone away for the whole of December and January until the metre was read,used minimal amounts gas and electric how would they charge me without knowing the metre readings? Shouldn't they have given people notice and asked for readings prior to the increase, to be honest and fair? I'd love an answer to this...because they could be making millions by estimating the time on the cheaper rate and the increased rate.
